When having to program or troubleshoot automation systems it can’t always be done from the comfort of home. The technician usually needs to be in front of the system and plugged in to be able to see the physical hardware. A plant floor can be a harsh environment, which a normal laptop isn’t designed to live in day in and day out. Power can be difficult to find on the plant floor as well rendering a standard computer useless once the battery dies.
So how do you tackle this problem?
The Siemens Field PG M6
The Field PG is a ruggedized engineering laptop from Siemens. It is protected by a lightweight magnesium enclosure with rubber bumpers on the corners, and is protected from dust and EMI. It is configurable with many different options to suit different budget and needs. Perhaps the biggest draw of the Field PG is that it has the option to come preloaded with the TIA Portal software, which can be large cost savings. In addition, the battery can last more than six hours on a full charge, which should provide ample time on the plant floor.
The PG comes with several connected port options, including 2 ethernet ports, USBs, and a Profibus port for older Siemens automation hardware. Another large advantage is that the Field PG can format Siemens memory cards in the correct format where a standard computer cannot. This is helpful if a memory card is needed to copy a program out of a PLC or other device.
There are accessories available for the Field PG such as a backpack, extra battery, adapters, and cables.
The Field PG is the ultimate package in hardware and software in the industry today and will make the task of programming and troubleshooting much easier. No longer will multiple adapters and software packages be needed on the plant floor with all the connections and software available on the Field PG.
