How many times have you seen new technology that would make a huge impact only to find out the price point is outside of your budget?
You do not have to have that fear when utilizing IO Link technology. In fact, it can often be extremely economical to implement! Additionally, it can reduce wiring and labor costs.
There are 2 primary IO-Link connection interfaces that you will need to complete a system. They include the IO-Link Master and IO-Link Hub. This is where the cost of the system varies. Remember that the sensors themselves have the capability (when specified) so the cost there is minimal. Some master/hub combinations can begin using the technology for under $200 and the range varies due to the number of IO points required and how many masters are utilized.
The best way to understand the true costs is to connect with the experts at EECO and let us come along side to design a solution that meets your needs. From there you will have application specific cost data that can be used to in making an informed decision moving forward.
Digging deeper into the IO-Link Master you will typically find inputs range from 4 to 8 devices.
NOTE: The master is where the magic happens! To access the diagnostics from your device you must use an IO-Link master to interpret the data. Without using the master your intelligent sensor will only provide standard sensor data.
The easiest way to think about IO-Link hubs is to associate them to discreate IO. Just by having a hub installed you do NOT gain access to the full range of data. Hubs range from 8 to 16 inputs and provide lower cost options to design systems with multiple sensors. Each hub connects to a Master and then you are off to the races.
Outside of the cost savings of pooling multiple devices hubs simplify the wiring process by utilizing Quick-Disconnect terminals. As you dig into the hub offering you will quickly identify the large variety of options with on machine capabilities. This could be a great way to reduce the need for junction boxes when expanding a line.
At the end of the day IO-Link systems are very attractive due to the low system cost and the data that can be utilized is where the true value lies.
If all you want to do is to turn something on and off this may not be the best solution. However, if you want to truly improve your process, have more meaningful data at your fingertips to make decisions and lower maintenance costs an IO-Link system is a solution worth evaluating.
