The most common way to configure a new managed network switch is within a web browser. With TIA Portal, most managed Siemens Scalance switches can be configured directly within the platform. Standard parameters can be assigned as well as assigning the switch to a specific PLC.
Network switches are not added to the project in the same manner as PLC, HMI, VFDs are. To add a network switch, the devices and networks tab must be opened. The catalog is shown with various devices including the network switches. The correct network switch for the project can then be selected and added to the view.
Once the network switch is in the project, it will show up in the project tree with additional automation devices in the project. The standard device configuration and diagnostics appear as options. While in the device and network view, the switch can be assigned to a PLC for diagnostics purposes.
Once the Switch is clicked on and opened to the properties tab, all the familiar settings will be shown that would be seen on the web interface. There is a button to take the user directly to the web interface if that method is preferred.
Settings within layer 2 and layer 3 can be manipulated for the network requirements of the project. Items such as managed ring networks can be configured and several other popular layer 2 features.
Events can be downloaded to an external location to be saved and the configuration of the network switch can be saved for backup purposes.
With Siemens TIA Portal the ability to integrate a network switch into the automation project can make the network settings easier between all devices. With everything in one platform, it makes managing the project easier than having to manage different packages. The ability to integrate the network switch with the PLC for diagnostics and alarms can make troubleshooting a network issue a breeze.
