When working with a Siemens variable frequency drive (VFD), there are a couple of different software options available for those that desire to utilize that technology. All programming can be done from the operator panel on the drive itself as it’s been done since VFD’s hit the industrial market. Let’s evaluate how to commission the drive using Startdrive within TIA Portal.
NOTE: another software that is available is called Starter and it is a great standalone option.
There are many benefits and features of using TIA Portal. One of the most unique features is the ability to have everything in one location and in one project. It is possible to add multiple VFDs to a project much in the same way that adding unlimited PLCs and HMIs works.
When adding a VFD in Startdrive the traditional catalog tool is a great option to ensure the right selection was made. Uploading a drive from an existing installation in the field is available as well. To add one from the catalog having the correct model number of all components is critical as there are usually multiple parts that make up a Siemens VFD.
To start with select the control unit. Then, add in the power module. Setup the IP Address of the control unit by double-clicking on one of the green ethernet ports and assigning an IP Address/ After the IP Address is set, select Commissioning which will start the commissioning wizard. The wizard allows for a quick startup of the drive with some of the basic parameters of the motor. Also, while the commissioning wizard runs select whether the drive is controlled by the PLC or not.
Once communication has been established, parameters can be modified and digital I/O can be determined. Within the control panel the feature in Startdrive motor testing is available to ensure everything is commissioned correctly to ensure successful operation.
With the TIA portal users have the benefit of having all devices in one place including the VFDs in the same project with the PLC. This allows one software solution to manage all automation needs.
