The purpose of this guide is to help technicians and engineers plan and expand their options when it comes to selecting the "Smart" Power Monitoring devices to help monitor their assets within a plant or industrial process. These assets could be actuators, solenoids, electrical feeds, and motors. A Smart Power Meter allows you to monitor all your electrical equipment within your industry and can provide proper reaction time in any case of failure. These electrical failures can bring an entire assembly line or manufacturing process to a screeching halt. Companies are always searching for ways to mitigate unscheduled downtime and improve their business processes.

Real-time monitoring and data aggregation capabilities gives technicians and engineers an insight into a systems electrical signature, thus providing critical data pointing to potential failures and having the ability to schedule downtime for repairs and maximizing OEE.

The industry 4.0 and IIoT movement, has forced manufacturers to develop their devices to meet stringent interoperability requirements in that most industrial architectures consist of multiple brand and models of automation controllers, PLC, and end devices. Users now will no longer accept constraints and be locked into using say Brand A's PLC and Brand A's VFD. With more and more smart device being available on the market, the option to mix and match different components from different manufacturers to meet specific application requirements and ultimately selecting the best-in-class smart devices to work together in harmony.

As such we have selected the Eaton PXM1000 Power Meter for its proven capabilities and will integrate the unit directly into a SIEMENS S71200 or S7-1500 PLC via Modbus TCP. Let's begin!
