Start Your Own Journey: A Three-Step Process to Smart Manufacturing

So far we have introduced the concept of smart manufacturing, building on the topics of network connectivity, smart devices and progression. The need to modernize aging equipment is usually the basis for action, but other events such as emerging projects could also spawn activity.

Step One: The Installed Base Evaluation (IBE)

The IBE is the blueprint for modernization. Get a handle on what you have in place -- from opportunities to threats. IBEs come in a variety of flavors depending on who provides them and what the objectives are. The choice of IBE provider really comes down to objectives and hurdles. IBEs may target a system, subsystem, equipment grouping (i.e. PLC cabinets) or more broad portions of the entire electrical infrastructure.

Step Two: The Smart Tech Review

Get a first-hand demo of the available technology based on the discovery from your IBE. Building on lessons learned from IBE activities, a good Smart Tech Review is a great intermediate step before actually specifying replacement technology.

Step Three: Planning Your Progression for Modernization

Information and device-level planning templates to help you think through your requirements and set device standards. A progression plan typically spans multiple years and should define standards for actual device replacement for both large projects and incremental repair opportunities.
